About the itemThe shamrock is a three leaf clover that is traditionally considered to be one of Ireland's symbols. It is often associated with Christianity, as it was used by St. Patrick to impart the Christian teachings of the Holy Trinity, hence the three parts of the leaf came to be said to represent God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. References to the shamrock can be traced back to the 1500s in literature, and along side their spiritual connotations they were referenced as food and herbal medicines in many early books. Indeed, shamrocks and other kinds of clover leaves are high in protein and are considered edible along with clover leaves and pods may also be dried and may either be grounded into flour or used as tea leaves.By the late 1700s, the shamrock symbol was used by Irish soldiers who rebelled against England. The symbol was then associated with rebellion, and to avoid being tagged a rebel, many Irish people wore the red and green cross instead. This paved the way for the shamrock to be closely associated with the Christian cross. The word shamrock originates from the Irish word, "seamrog", which literally is taken to mean ?small clover?. In ancient times, even before the shamrock was associated with St. Patrick, the Druids even considered the resiliency of the shamrock to thrive even in the highest altitudes as a sign of the potency of life. They considered shamrocks as symbols of motherhood and joy also and had often used them in Celtic rituals. In the 1800s they were widely used in Victorian art and jewellery where they were considered a ? lucky? symbol. Many people believe that shamrocks have medicinal properties, and that they may be used to cure scorpion stings as well as snake bites ? whether this is the case is questionable, but we think that they look great, and regardless of your religion of beliefs they are a great way to say ?good luck"!
